About Yoga
Yoga is an ancient science which has documented roots dating back to around 1500 BCE. The word yoga can be understood to mean uniting the individual self with the Higher Self. Yoga is also understood in the context of three genres: Karma, Bhakti, and Jňana. An individual may strive for this union through perfected action, purified emotion, or purified mind.
In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali provides the definition of yoga, as well as methods of attaining this perfected state of citta vritti nirodha. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, written by Swami Svatmarama, details the method of Hatha Yoga practice. Additionally, Srimad Bhagavad Gita is an 18 chapter sacred text which outlines the three approaches to yoga (Karma, Bhakti, and Jňana) in detail, as prescribed by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield during the battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas.
These sacred texts provide a deeper understanding of why we employ yoga practices and methods. Through instruction in yoga practice, you are guided in asana and pranayama techniques to help support your journey. Marnie (Medha, as she is known in her yoga community) has been a certified yoga instructor since 2004.
